Fly above the Andean mountains! The paragliding spots San Felix and Rionegro are easily accessible from Medellin, offering breathtaking views and an unforgettable experience. Newbies can take a tandem flight with a professional instructor to enjoy the pleasure of flying like a bird – just don’t forget to wear a warm jumper, as it gets chilly in the air!

3. hiking in the hills around Medellin

Lace up your hiking boots and uncover the hidden gems of Medellín’s surrounding hills! Discover crystal-clear rivers, breathtaking views of the city, and stunning natural scenery. Popular spots like Cerro El Volador and Cerro de las Tres Cruces offer panoramic views, while Envigado’s ecological trails, such as Sendero Ecológico Arenales and Parque El Salado, provide a tranquil escape into nature.

When hiking in the hills around Medellin you should go with a guide and/or a group of people. Check out this popular and recommended nature hike in the Los Salados Park in Arenales (Viator.com)* – also available with a different operator via GetYourGuide* (equally loved).

4. Day Trip to Guatapé and Piedra del Peñol – or more?

Just a 2-hour bus ride from Medellín, the colorful lake town of Guatapé and the impressive black Piedra del Peñol monolith await! This photogenic duo is a must-see, offering stunning scenery and unforgettable experiences.

Even though there are a lot of affordable and well-received day tours from Medellín to Guatapé (GetYourGuide.com)*, I’d actually recommend visiting independently and spending at least one night there. Read my article on Guatapé and Piedra del Peñol to find out why!

5. Yoga, Water Sports and Cacao Tours in San Rafael

From Guatapé, it’s not far to San Rafael and San Carlos, two hidden gems offering a range of exciting river activities such as tubing, swimming, canyoning, and rappelling in a pristine natural setting.

Nestled between San Rafael and San Carlos is the Vanadurga Yoga Ashram, a unique yoga retreat immersed in lush vegetation (view on Google Maps).

After exploring the rivers, treat yourself to a chocolate experience in San Rafael’s cacao farms. It’s easiest and cheapest to book San Rafael Cacao Tours from Guatapé (instead of Medellín). Check out the tours from Guatapé below.

6. Explore beautiful colonial towns near Medellin

Medellín’s surroundings are dotted with quaint colonial towns, each a treasure trove of history, culture, and natural splendor. Take a journey to these gems and discover the region’s unique charm:

  • El Retiro (1 hour by bus): A peaceful and easy escape from Medellín with beautiful natural surroundings and a charming town square.
  • Santa Fe de Antioquia (1,5 hours by bus). A historical, well-preserved colonial town with cobblestone streets, and a famous suspension bridge (Puente de Occidente). Many online bookable day tours are private and require at least 2 participants, but this Santa Fe de Antioquia day tour* from Medellín on GetYourGuide is solo traveler friendly.
  • Jardín (3-4 hours by bus). Often named as one of Colombia’s most beautiful towns, Jardín features colorful houses, a beautiful basilica, and stunning surroundings ideal for coffee tours and outdoor activities. Here’s a day trip from Medellín including Jardín and other charming towns (GetYourGuide.com)*, but you may also consider traveling independently and spending the night to have more time.
  • Jericó (3 hours by bus): A charming Pueblo Patrimonio with colorful houses, often referred to as the “Athens of Antioquia” for its religious and cultural significance. A hidden gem and more off-the-beaten-path than Jardín.

Don’t miss the zipline hammocks suspended over a canyon and waterfall.

Book a top-rated tour from Medellín with hotel pickup for an unforgettable experience – here are two great options for solo travelers.

If you are a group, private tours are also available.

If you want to go independently and by bus, here’s how:

  • To get to Los Saltos Ecoparque (Reserva Natural Salto Del Buey), take the bus towards Abejorral at 6:20 AM from Terminal de Transporte del Norte in Medellín and tell the bus driver to drop you off at Fonda La Aguacatala (ca. 1,5 hours drive, see Rome2Rio).
  • From there, it’s a 25 minute walk to the entrance of the Ecopark. You can also arrange a pick-up service with the Ecopark at +57 350 736 5053.
  • To get back to Medellin you can catch the bus at 4PM at Fonda La Aguacatala. (Please check current bus time tables before you go.)

8. River Rafting in Antioquia

Medellín is surrounded by rivers that offer adrenaline-packed white-water rafting experiences in scenic settings amidst lush forests. All of the following rivers are located within a 3-hour drive from Medellín and each offers a different type of rafting experience:

  • Río Santo Domingo (near Cocorná): This river offers beginner-friendly rafting on guided tours, with some sections suitable for more experienced rafters. Its crystalline waters flow through lush jungle, past natural pools, and waterfalls.
  • Río Samaná (San Luis/San Roque or Cocorná): Approximately 1,5-3 hours from Medellín (depending on your entry point). This remote river offers diverse rafting experiences through a jungle canyon with waterfalls and exceptional biodiversity – while most of the river requires advanced skills, some sections are also suitable for beginners (in guided tours).
  • Río Calderas (near San Rafael): Approximately 2 hours from Medellín. With beautiful and uncrowded natural landscapes, the Río Calderas offers a fun rafting experience suitable for a range of skill levels.
  • Río Verde (near Boquerón): Approximately 2.5 hours from Medellín. Known for its striking emerald waters, the Río Verde provides a thrilling rafting adventure (best for intermediate to advanced rafters), sometimes combined with hiking trips. Day trips to Rio Verde* can be booked online on Viator.

Pro Tip: Water levels are typically highest during the rainy seasons (April-May and September-November) which makes rafting more challenging. Confirm the suitability of the trip for your experience level with your chosen tour provider.

9. Horseback Riding Adventures near Medellín

The hilly countryside surrounding Medellín offers spectacular horseback riding opportunities along scenic trails, past coffee farms, cloud forests, and traditional Antioquian villages. These excursions range from 2-hour beginner trails to full-day adventures, often including authentic Colombian lunch stops at farms. Check out the top-rated experiences on GetYourGuide*. below.

10. Wellness & Self Care in the hills of Medellin

The mountains surrounding Medellín hide serene sanctuaries for relaxation, digital detox and spiritual connection – from natural hot springs and forest baths to yoga retreats, healing spas, and Temazcal ceremonies. Just outside the city, Santa Elena is a secret wellness haven.

Check out these unique experiences:

11. Cerro Tusa: Conquering the Mystical Natural Pyramid

About 2 hours southwest of Medellín, in Venecia, Cerro Tusa’s near-perfect pyramid shape offers one of Antioquia’s most distinctive hiking challenges for experienced and fit hikers. The super steep 2-3 hour ascent to the summit of this geological wonder leads you through tropical forest and open fields and rewards you with panoramic views of the Cauca River Valley. Bring gloves!

Cerro Tusa was a sacred site for the ancestral Indigenous people of the region, and evidence of rituals has been found at its base.

If you can get a group of at least 2 people together (and are EXTREMELY fit), check out this unique Tusa Tour (Viator.com)*.

12. Hiking in the Wax Palm Forest "La Samaria"

If you don’t have the time to take the 5-hour bus ride to Salento to visit Valle del Cocora with its wax palm trees, Bosque De Palma De Cera “La Samaria” is a great alternative. The bus to nearby Salamina from Medellin takes only 3 hours.

The wax palm forest (which is said to feature even taller palms than Valle del Cocora) is located near the little village of San Felix (view on Google Maps). Both Salamina and San Felix are worth visiting on their own and great places to spend a night.
