Fly above the Andean mountains! The paragliding spots San Felix and Rionegro are easily accessible from Medellin, offering breathtaking views and an unforgettable experience. Newbies can take a tandem flight with a professional instructor to enjoy the pleasure of flying like a bird – just don’t forget to wear a warm jumper, as it gets chilly in the air!

Discover the rich flavors of Antioquia, one of Colombia’s premier coffee-producing regions! Visit a local coffee farm near Medellín to uncover the secrets of coffee-making, from bean to cup, and indulge in a tasting experience that’ll leave you buzzing!
Here my top picks of coffee tours in the surroundings of Medellín (suitable for solo travelers):
Lace up your hiking boots and uncover the hidden gems of Medellín’s surrounding hills! Discover crystal-clear rivers, breathtaking views of the city, and stunning natural scenery. Popular spots like Cerro El Volador and Cerro de las Tres Cruces offer panoramic views, while Envigado’s ecological trails, such as Sendero Ecológico Arenales and Parque El Salado, provide a tranquil escape into nature.
When hiking in the hills around Medellin you should go with a guide and/or a group of people. Check out this popular and recommended nature hike in the Los Salados Park in Arenales (Viator.com)* – also available with a different operator via GetYourGuide* (equally loved).

Just a 2-hour bus ride from Medellín, the colorful lake town of Guatapé and the impressive black Piedra del Peñol monolith await! This photogenic duo is a must-see, offering stunning scenery and unforgettable experiences.
Even though there are a lot of affordable and well-received day tours from Medellín to Guatapé (GetYourGuide.com)*, I’d actually recommend visiting independently and spending at least one night there. Read my article on Guatapé and Piedra del Peñol to find out why!

From Guatapé, it’s not far to San Rafael and San Carlos, two hidden gems offering a range of exciting river activities such as tubing, swimming, canyoning, and rappelling in a pristine natural setting.
Nestled between San Rafael and San Carlos is the Vanadurga Yoga Ashram, a unique yoga retreat immersed in lush vegetation (view on Google Maps).
After exploring the rivers, treat yourself to a chocolate experience in San Rafael’s cacao farms. It’s easiest and cheapest to book San Rafael Cacao Tours from Guatapé (instead of Medellín). Check out the tours from Guatapé below.
Medellín’s surroundings are dotted with quaint colonial towns, each a treasure trove of history, culture, and natural splendor. Take a journey to these gems and discover the region’s unique charm:

Get ready for adventure at Los Saltos Ecopark, a nature reserve near La Ceja boasting over 10 stunning waterfalls, including Colombia’s towering Salto del Buey. This adrenaline junkie’s paradise offers a range of activities, from the soft adventures of wildlife spotting and birdwatching to heart-pounding experiences like canopying, canyoning, climbing, hiking, and zip-lining – including the longest zipline in Colombia! Don’t miss the zipline hammocks suspended over a canyon and waterfall.
Book a top-rated tour from Medellín with hotel pickup for an unforgettable experience – here are two great options for solo travelers.
If you want to go independently and by bus, here’s how:
Medellín is surrounded by rivers that offer adrenaline-packed white-water rafting experiences in scenic settings amidst lush forests. All of the following rivers are located within a 3-hour drive from Medellín and each offers a different type of rafting experience:
Pro Tip: Water levels are typically highest during the rainy seasons (April-May and September-November) which makes rafting more challenging. Confirm the suitability of the trip for your experience level with your chosen tour provider.
The hilly countryside surrounding Medellín offers spectacular horseback riding opportunities along scenic trails, past coffee farms, cloud forests, and traditional Antioquian villages. These excursions range from 2-hour beginner trails to full-day adventures, often including authentic Colombian lunch stops at farms. Check out the top-rated experiences on GetYourGuide*. below.
The mountains surrounding Medellín hide serene sanctuaries for relaxation, digital detox and spiritual connection – from natural hot springs and forest baths to yoga retreats, healing spas, and Temazcal ceremonies. Just outside the city, Santa Elena is a secret wellness haven.

About 2 hours southwest of Medellín, in Venecia, Cerro Tusa’s near-perfect pyramid shape offers one of Antioquia’s most distinctive hiking challenges for experienced and fit hikers. The super steep 2-3 hour ascent to the summit of this geological wonder leads you through tropical forest and open fields and rewards you with panoramic views of the Cauca River Valley. Bring gloves!
Cerro Tusa was a sacred site for the ancestral Indigenous people of the region, and evidence of rituals has been found at its base.
If you can get a group of at least 2 people together (and are EXTREMELY fit), check out this unique Tusa Tour (Viator.com)*.

If you don’t have the time to take the 5-hour bus ride to Salento to visit Valle del Cocora with its wax palm trees, Bosque De Palma De Cera “La Samaria” is a great alternative. The bus to nearby Salamina from Medellin takes only 3 hours.
The wax palm forest (which is said to feature even taller palms than Valle del Cocora) is located near the little village of San Felix (view on Google Maps). Both Salamina and San Felix are worth visiting on their own and great places to spend a night.
