Coffee Triangle, Coffee Zone Colombia: Things to do

Things to Do in Pereira, Armenia and Manizales (Coffee Triangle)

Pereira, Armenia, and Manizales define Colombia’s iconic Coffee Triangle – a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the country’s top sustainable coffee-producing regions. The “Colombian Tuscany”, with its lush green hills and stunning valleys, is dotted with charming colonial towns, family-run coffee farms, and impressive natural wonders.

Choosing the perfect base to explore the Coffee Triangle can be tough. Pereira, Armenia, Manizales, and charming small villages like Salento and Filandia, all offer unique experiences and are very close to each other. Should you immerse yourself in nature near Manizales and Salento, explore the city life of Pereira – or the pleasant small town atmosphere of Armenia?

This guide helps you compare things to do in Pereira, Armenia, and Manizales and find your personal base in the Coffee Triangle.

12 Top Things to do in Pereira & nearby

Santa Rosa de Cabal Waterfalls and Hot Springs, Pereira Attractions

Pereira (Risaralda) is strategically located between Manizales and Armenia. It’s the largest city of the coffee triangle and offers urban delights combined with easy access to nearby cultural and nature attractions. Pereira serves as an excellent base for day trips to the entire coffee triangle.

What to do in Pereira? Here are my suggestions:

  1. Stroll through Pereira: Leisurely stroll through the historic center of Pereira around Plaza Bolivar, admire the stunning Cathedral, and enjoy a delicious regional coffee in one of the charming cafes of Carrera 6.
  2. Explore the nightlife around Circunvalar. Pereira’s nightlife district is located around Avenida Circunvalar. It’s packed with trendy restaurants, bars, shopping malls, and parks – perfect to experience the city’s modern energy.
  3. Relax in Parque Olaya Herrera: Admire the old train station at Parque Olaya Herrera and unwind on a tranquil park bench.
  4. Enjoy the views from Cerro Canceles: Cerro Canceles is a pleasant public park in the eastern hills of Pereira which offers stunning views of the city and its surroundings.
  5. Discover the Pereira Art Museum: The small Pereira art museum features modern and contemporary Colombian art in a beautiful architectural setting.
  6. Stroll through Pereira’s Botanical Garden: Unlike typical botanical gardens with organized sections, the Botanical Garden of the Technological University of Pereira (Jardín Botánico UTP) is a natural forest and unique nature reserve with high biodiversity. For example, I spotted an agouti and a blue-crowned motmot, and even heard howler monkeys.
  7. Visit a coffee plantation: Take a trip to a nearby coffee plantation to learn about the coffee-making process, from bean to cup, and indulge in tasting different varieties of this delicious dark beverage.
  8. Give yourself a treat in the Santa Rosa de Cabal thermal baths: Nestled in a breathtaking natural setting, these therapeutic thermal baths are a sanctuary of relaxation and an easy escape from Pereira. Tours to the Santa Rosa de Cabal hot springs from Pereira are usually composed of transport and entrance fee; the price is attractive if you are at least two people. Solo travelers may prefer taking the bus from Pereira (approximately 45 min) and then a local bus or jeep (“Willy”) up to the thermal baths in the mountains (ca. 40 min).
  9. Hike in the Otún Quimbaya Sanctuary: Embark on a hiking adventure in the peaceful Otún Quimbaya Sanctuary, where you can encounter diverse ecosystems such as cloud forests, wetlands, rivers, and lagoons, and witness the region’s rich flora and fauna. You can book tours to Otún Quimbaya*, for example, on Civitatis.com.
  10. Engage in outdoor activities near Pereira: With its pleasant climate and stunning surroundings, Pereira provides numerous outdoor activities to enjoy. Choose from mountain biking, zip-lining, canopy tours, river rafting, kayaking, hiking, horseback riding, birdwatching, and more.
  11. Take day trips to explore the Quindío coffee region: Visit the beautiful colonial towns of Filandia and Salento, and explore the otherworldly Cocora Valley with its towering wax palm trees. (See my article on Salento and Valle del Cocora.)
  12. Visit hidden gems in Risaralda: A scenic and 1-1,5 hour bus ride takes you from Pereira up the mountains to colonial gem Marsella, sometimes called Colombia’s greenest city and ecological capital due to its stunning setting. If you like river towns, jump on the bus to La Virginia and walk across the historical red hanging bridge Puente Bernardo Arango, one of most beautiful bridges in Colombia.

  6. Hike to El Recuerdo Waterfall: Embark on a hike through lush forests on the outskirts of Armenia to reach the impressive and refreshing El Recuerdo waterfall. This natural wonder offers a tranquil escape and an opportunity to reconnect with nature.

  7. Have fun at Parque del Cafe: Beautiful Parque del Cafe is located about 30 minutes by car from Armenia (view on Google Maps). This coffee and amusement park offers a variety of activities related to coffee culture and pays homage to Colombia’s coffee cultivators. It also features roller coaster rides, cable cars, and other fun stuff.

  8. Engage in outdoor activities near Armenia: The natural surroundings of Armenia provide a fantastic playground for outdoor enthusiasts and allow to enjoy a large range of outdoor and adventure activities, including hiking, horseback riding, swimming, bird watching, river rafting, kayaking, paragliding, and more. For example, you can visit Eco Parque Peñas Blanca (Google Maps), the Rio Verde Waterfalls (Google Maps) or Salto del Hippie Waterfalls (Google Maps).

If you’re mainly planning to hike in Valle del Cocora, it may be convenient to stay directly in Salento (or in nearby Filandia).

Manizales (Caldas) is nestled in the majestic Andes mountains and exudes a charming bohemian atmosphere with its delightful cafes and vibrant cultural scene. Manizales is said to feature some of Colombia’s most beautiful sunsets. Its proximity to Nevado del Ruiz also makes it a fantastic destination for outdoor enthusiasts.

There is a wide array of fun activities and interesting attractions in Manizales and around the city. Here is my selection.

  1. Explore the historic center of Manizales: Wander through the colorful colonial streets and relax at Plaza Bolivar, which features refreshing fountains and beautiful sculptures. Admire the stunning neo-gothic cathedral with its beautiful stained glass windows in Manizales’ old town. Take the elevator to the top of the cathedral (“El Corredor Polaco”) to enjoy amazing views of Manizales.
  2. Stroll through the picturesque Chipre neighborhood: Take a walk along the colorful Calle del Cable, enjoy a delicious cup of coffee in one of the bohemian cafes, and search for hidden libraries. Take in the breathtaking panoramic views from this elevated neighborhood and visit the observation deck of the Cable Tower.
  3. Ride a cable car or do a Skywalk: Take a cable car ride from the city center to the Villamaria or Chipre neighborhood and marvel at the magnificent views of Manizales and its surrounding landscapes. If you need more adrenaline, you can try the Skywalk at Torre Chipre (view Tico and Cata’s YouTube video to get an idea of the thrill).
  4. Explore Los Yarumos Ecopark: This easily accessible huge ecological park and natural reserve features a diverse flora and fauna. The park offers botanical experiences, opportunities for hiking and birdwatching and even some free adventure activities. Los Yarumos is a remarkable example of urban innovation as it aims to provide positive recreational options for the youth.
  5. Search for the “Barranquillo” bird in the Los Alcazares Ecopark: A great park for birdwatching, and spotting the cute local blue “Barranquillo” bird, is Ecoparque Los Alcázares Arenillo (Google Maps). There are free guided tours at certain times. Warmly recommended! Please check current availability with the park before going.
  6. Stargaze at the Astronomical Observatory: Located just outside the city, the Astronomical Observatory of Manizales boasts powerful telescopes that allow you to marvel at the brilliant stars above the Andes mountains.
  7. Visit nearby coffee farms: Manizales provides convenient access to nearby coffee farms where you can learn about the cultivation and production processes of coffee. Hacienda Venecia (Google Maps) is a reknown option just 30 minutes from Manizales – and Finca la Chinca (Atardeceres del Café) is a hidden gem offering coffee experiences (GetYourGuide.com)* in the mountains, just 15 minutes away from Manizales.
  8. Mountain trekking in Los Nevados National Natural Park: This scenic national park is home to several volcanoes, including the snow-capped Nevado del Ruiz. Explore stunning lakes, paramos with unique flora, secret thermal springs, and diverse wildlife. Trekking in this high-altitude region offers a truly unique adventure. You should definitely not do the hike alone or without a guide, though, as several hikers have gone missing or had accidents in this national park. Check out this recommended Nevado del Ruiz and Hot Springs tour (Viator.com)*, available in English and Spanish, – or this similar, a bit cheaper tour in Spanish only (Civitatis.com)*.
  9. Relax in the hot springs around Manizales: Just a 30-minute drive southeast of the city center, you’ll find several hot springs where you can unwind and rejuvenate amidst the breathtaking natural surroundings. One notable option is Ecotermales El Otoño (Google Maps). Tours are available for example on GetYourGuide.com*.
  10. Visit a Tango bar: Manizales and Medellín are Colombia’s Tango hotspots. Visit one of the clubs and bars in Calle del Tango (Tango street), possibly during the weekend when there are live concerts.
  11. Pay a tribute to women in Parque de la Mujer: Manizales’ Rafael Arango Villegas Park was renamed Parque de la Mujer (Park of the Woman) in 2011, after writer Rafael Arango Villegas had been criticised for a sexist and misogynistic book. The park now serves as a symbol of female empowerment, gender equality and recognition of women’s contributions to society. Featuring sculptures, green spaces, and various facilities, the park aims to create an inclusive space, addressing issues like gender-based violence and providing services for the LGBT+ community.
  12. Connect with nature in Recinto del Pensamiento: In about 20 minutes from Manizales, you reach Recinto del Pensamiento, a nature reserve with diverse flora and fauna, featuring a medical plant garden, an orchid forest, a butterfly observatory, opportunities for bird watching, and a range of other ecological and educational activities. Weather And Climate in Pereira, Armenia and Manizales

Weather and climate may help you decide which of the three cities, Pereira, Armenia or Manizales, you prefer as your base in the coffee triangle, since it differs quite a lot.

The altitude of Manizales is notably higher compared to Pereira and Armenia (2160m/7,086 feet vs. ca. 1450m/4,760 feet); thus Manizales features a cooler climate with average daytime temperatures around 19/20°C (66/68°F) and nighttime temperatures around 12°C (54°F) throughout the year.

Pereira and Armenia feature temperatures around 26°C (79°F) during the day and around 17°C (63°F) during the night. October and November are typically the months with the most rain in all three cities.

Conclusion: Pereira vs Armenia vs manizales

As you can see, each of these three cities has its own strengths and can make a great base for exploring the Coffee Triangle. The best choice for you really depends on your personal preferences and needs.

Personally, I’ve been to the Coffee Triangle three times so far. The first time, my main goal was to go hiking in Valle del Cocora. So, I simply stayed in nearby Salento and had a very relaxing time. (It was low season though—in high season Salento can get quite crowded.)

The second time I wanted to get to know Manizales and the surrounding areas, like Nevado del Ruiz. I stayed in the Chipre area in the city and it’s a really nice, walkable city!

The third time I wanted to explore some villages in the Coffee Triangle and visit the thermal baths of Santa Rosa de Cabal. I stayed at Hotel Entre Lomas (Booking.com*) on the mountain between Pereira/Dosquebradas and Santa Rosa de Cabal. In addition to the great views, it turned out to be a very strategic location since the buses to Pereira Terminal passed by very close to the hotel, and from the terminal it was super easy and cheap to explore nearby villages by bus. In the other direction, it was easy to get to the thermal baths. Personally, I prefer the surroundings of Pereira to the city itself.

If I had only 4 days to explore the Coffee Triangle, I would probably stay 2 days in Filandia and 2 days in Manizales. Filandia is a very charming, calm town with a strategic location and good bus connections to the gems of Quindío and Risaralda; Manizales has a totally different vibe and complements the experience.

Coffee Triangle Safety & Solo Travel Tips

It’s easy to travel within the coffee triangle for solo travelers. Pereira, Armenia and Manizales are well connected by public transport, both between each other and with other Colombian cities. The area is very dense in cultural and natural attractions and you don’t need to move far to get to the next exciting sight.

The coffee triangle is considered among the safest regions to visit in Colombia. As always when traveling you should apply some precautions. Please have a look at my Safety Tips for Solo Travelers in Colombia and Solo Travel Guide.

When it comes to hikes and treks, in Colombia it’s mostly better to go in a group. Team up with people from your hotel or hostel, or check Colombia travel groups on Facebook.

Coffee Triangle, Coffee Zone or Coffee Axis?

Strictly speaking, Colombia’s Coffee Zone (Zona Cafetera) – or Coffee Region – also includes the departments of Huila and Tolima. The Coffee Zone is constantly evolving! (And there are even more coffee regions scattered throughout Colombia…)

The terms Coffee Triangle, Coffee Axis, or Eje Cafetero (in Spanish) are more accurate when referring to the original area defined by the departments Risaralda, Quindío, and Caldas. The traditional Coffee Triangle is the most developed in terms of tourism.

However, I also warmly recommend exploring Huila and Tolima. Huila is characterized by its magical atmosphere, and Tolima by its unique off-the-beaten-path charm. I love them both and think they are perfect destinations for adventurous travelers! Read more about Huila and Tolima

Where to go next

The coffee triangle is set more or less in the center of Colombia and it’s super easy to get from there to other exciting travel destinations in the country.

  • Medellin: Medellin is a favorite for many locals, expats and travelers. It takes about 4.5 hours to get to Medellin from Manizales. From Medellin to Pereira it’s about 6 hours. Find out what to do in and around Medellin!

  • Honda and Bogotá: The charming colonial river town Honda is one of Colombia’s best kept secrets, as is the nearby Ciudad Perdida de Falan (“Lost City of Falan”), ruins of an abandoned colonial mining down deep in the forest. It takes approximately 3 hours by bus to get to Honda from Manizales (see Rome2Rio) and another 3 hours to get from Honda to Bogotá (see Rome2Rio), Colombia’s fascinating capital in the mountains. We warmly recommend to stop over in Honda on your way to Bogota and explore this unique hidden gem. Read more about Honda and the Lost City of Falan.

  • Norcasia (Río La Miel): In another 1.5-2 hours from Honda you reach spectacular Río La Miel and Embalse Amani in Norcasia. Norcasia is rather little known among foreigners, but it’s a fantastic nature destination offering loads of opportunities for fun outdoor and water activities like body rafting and kayaking.

  • Ibagué: In about 2 hours by bus you can get from Pereira to Ibagué, the capital of the Tolima department and a secret outdoorhub. Ibague didn’t preserve its colonial center as well as some other Colombian cities, but it seduces with its excellent cuisine and striking natural surroundings featuring great opportunities for hiking and other outdoor activities. Read more about things to do in Ibague.

  • Cali: From Armenia it’s only about 3 hours by bus to Cali, Colombia’s vibrant Salsa Capital. Discover what to do in Cali and its surroundings.
